The Intermediate Accountant, under supervision, provides financial services to assigned colleges and divisions. These services include accounting, audit and compliance support, financial and budget processing (e.g. labor, procurement, and payment transactions), and reporting and analysis of financial and operational results. Reporting to the Senior Accountant, the Intermediate Accountant works closely with area personnel, including coordinators and executives, to monitor the financial health of the division and maintain appropriate books and records for the area's financial transactions and budgets.
This Intermediate Accountant is proficient in the business affairs of the assigned area and, from time-to-time, may serve as the point of contact for business related matters. This position will develop strong enterprise-wide relationships to effectuate appropriate actions and resolutions related to financial matters of the unit. The Intermediate Accountant will help optimize business processes and performance, within the framework of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the university's related policies and internal controls.
The Intermediate Accountant may supervise clerical positions and will travel frequently between campuses.
Responsibilities & Duties
Accounting, audit, and compliance support: Identify and process accounting transactions for assigned areas. Participate in month and year end close procedures and reconcile monthly reporting. Assist with internal and external audit requests. Participate in Quality Assurance and Sarbanes Oxley reviews.
HR position data and payment requests: Support processes related to personnel management for assigned areas, including processing position data change requests and payment requests. Reconcile labor and paid time off reports. Assist with annual salary planning efforts for assigned areas.
Procurement and payment of goods and services: Process purchase order and payment requests and maintain vendor relationships. Review and submit pro-card transactions and employee reimbursements, verifying documentation and approvals.
Budget development and maintenance: Participate in the annual budget planning process for assigned areas and review budget to actual variances throughout the fiscal year. Identify and process budget adjustments throughout the year, and work with area executives and personnel to address issues or concerns.
Financial reporting and analysis: Assist with financial analysis and reporting for assigned areas. From time-to-time, develop reporting and analysis. Under supervision, reforecast current year results for assigned areas to help inform overall university projections.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree required.
1-2 years of experience in Accounting, Audit, or Finance.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
PeopleSoft General Ledger or other ERP Ledger experience.
Dollar Amount - The Intermediate Accountant is responsible for participating in processes and transactions for college and division operating and capital budgets totaling in the range of $100 million.
Contacts - This position provides guidance on GAAP and compliance on policies and procedures for their assigned areas. This position has frequent contact with the Controller's Office, Human Resources, and other support areas.
Payments - This position reviews and submits for approval a variety of payment requests for their assigned areas.
Information - This position requires access to information that is considered confidential. This may include employee, student, or university information.

Intermediate spreadsheet, database and word processing skills.
Intermediate analytical skills, including finding synthesis and drawing conclusions from disparate data sources to provide comprehensive and meaningful conclusions.
As a salaried and degreed professional, evening or weekend work may be necessary when deadlines, projects or audits need to be completed.
This position requires travel between the Loop and the Lincoln Park campuses.
