The Senior Accountant provides financial services to assigned colleges and divisions. These services include accounting, audit and compliance support, financial and budget processing (e.g. labor, procurement, and payment transactions), and reporting and analysis of financial and operational results. Reporting to the Manager of Financial Services, the Senior Accountant works closely with area personnel, including coordinators and executives, to monitor the financial health of the division and maintain appropriate books and records for the area's financial transactions and budgets.
This Senior Accountant is an expert in the business affairs of the assigned area and is the point of contact for all business related matters. This position will develop strong enterprise-wide relationships to effectuate appropriate actions and resolutions related to financial matters of the unit. The Senior Accountant will optimize business processes and performance, within the framework of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the university's related policies and internal controls.
The Senior Accountant supervises accountants, analysts, and/or other clerical positions and will travel frequently between campuses.
Responsibilities & Duties
Accounting, audit, and compliance support:
Manage all accounting processes and oversee all accounting transactions for assigned areas.
Lead month and year end close procedures and reconcile monthly reporting.
Provide technical accounting assistance and develop approaches for adhering to new and/or complex accounting issues.
Coordinate and oversee all internal and external audit requests.
Manage all compliance requirements and serve as point person for all internal Quality Assurance and Sarbanes Oxley reviews.
HR position data and payment requests:
Support processes related to personnel management for assigned areas, including processing position data change requests and payment requests.
Reconcile labor and paid time off reports.
Lead annual salary planning efforts for assigned areas and coordinate training.
Procurement and payment of goods and services:
Initiate purchase order and payment requests, maintain vendor relationships and negotiate contracts.
Review and approve pro-card transactions and employee reimbursements, verifying documentation and approvals.
Budget development and maintenance:
Lead annual budget planning process for assigned areas and review budget to actual variances throughout the fiscal year.
Identify and process budget adjustments throughout the year, and work with area executives and personnel to address issues or concerns.
Financial reporting and analysis:
Lead financial analysis and reporting for assigned areas.
Create executive-level reporting and analysis, create ad-hoc reporting at the departmental and program level, and engage with executives to produce long-range financial plans for assigned areas.
Reforecast current year results for assigned areas to help inform overall university projections.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum of 4 years experience in Accounting, Audit, or Finance.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
CPA or Advanced degree.
2-3 years supervisory or managerial role.
PeopleSoft General Ledger or other ERP Ledger experience.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
Ability to create and deliver presentations.
Direct managerial responsibility for 1 to 2 accountants, analysts, and/or clerks.
Ensures staff are appropriately trained, receive professional development opportunities and are properly managed.
Dollar Amount - The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing processes and transactions for college and division operating and capital budgets totaling in the range of $100 million.
Contacts - This position provides guidance to area executives and personnel on audit, compliance and policy matters, and provides technical guidance on GAAP. This position has frequent contact with the Controller's Office, Human Resources, and other support areas.
Payments - This position reviews and approves a variety of payment requests for their assigned areas.
