The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking an Accounting Associate. Under the direction of the Director of Hospital Reimbursement works as a liaison between Hospital Finance and the Graduate Medical Education office (GME), collaborates on resident invoicing to affiliate sites and College of Medicine and manages the collection of receivables. Compiles and analyzes data and assists in the completion and audit defense of third-party cost reports in accordance with regulations. Participates in improvement and modification of Reimbursement and Hospital Finance processes to improve process operation and reimbursement.
The Accounting Associate is expected to devise the work plan to complete tasks in a timely, accurate and efficient manner using the resources available within Hospital Finance and UI Health. It is expected that all work be carried out in a professional manner in conformance with University Policies and procedures as well as third party payer regulations and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Graduate Medical Education (GME)
Receive Affiliate and College Department invoices from GME Office and review for reasonableness and accuracy. Work with GME, College Departments and Affiliate representatives to resolve invoicing discrepancies and issues. Document purpose and calculation of adjustments to invoices prepared by GME. Summarize monthly invoicing trends and comparison to budget from GME and Finance Management.
Responsible for collection of outstanding receivable balances on a timely basis. Follows up with affiliate and College Department contacts as necessary. Access the common repository of the Provider Level Agreements (PLAs) and other relevant documents as necessary.
Account for payments received to the GME receivable detail and prepare monthly journal entries to reflect GME invoicing and collection activity. Prepared calculation of the GME bad debt reserves for review and approval by Director. Assist GME with annual budget preparation and explanation of variances during the fiscal year.
Assist with the preparation of Medicare cost report by gathering resident rotation detail and costs. Use GME tracking software (New Innovation) to retrieve rotation and demographic detail. Provide periodic quality reviews and verification of resident data in the software coordinating between GME, College Departments and Affiliates.
Third Party Cost Reporting and Analysis
Using knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid government regulations, complete statistical and financial modeling necessary for cost reports to ensure all possible reimbursement enhancements or opportunities are captured. Ensure the reporting of Graduate Medical Education expenses and FTEs are appropriate and accurate.
Prepare analysis of new developments and/or proposals in the reimbursement field to determine the financial impact on UI Health. Recommend improvements and modifications to departmental operating procedures to maximize operating efficiency and reimbursement from third party payers.
Gather data and complete required analysis at the request of outside organizations during audits by Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross. Provide reports of the financial impact of audit adjustments to management.
Provide assistance, by reviewing current and prior years' data and other necessary variance explanations, in coordinating the annual financial audit of by outside audit firms.
Perform other duties and participate in special accounting projects as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Required:
1. (A) Bachelor's degree with a major in Accountancy or a related field AND two (2) years of professional level accounting experience.
(B) Possession of a current registration as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, or a valid License to practice Public Accounting.
(C) Master's degree in Accountancy or a related field.
2. Knowledge of third party reimbursement rules, regulations and reporting procedures requirements is essential. Medicare cost report knowledge desired, specifically Graduate Medical Education reimbursement.
Ability to prepare and / or develop financial and statistical models and analysis to evaluate reimbursement related issues.
Ability to utilize software such as EXCEL, WORD, ACCESS and other necessary software at an elevated level. Detail knowledge of financial and patient accounting systems as they relate to the reimbursement field.
Ability to work independently coupled with excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel within and outside of Finance.
