General Summary The Controller reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Operations (EVP). The Controller will work closely with the EVP for financial statement presentations, analysis, and similar reports to senior management and Audit, Finance, and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees. The Controller's fundamental purpose is to ensure that University fiscal practices comply with relevant federal, state, and local rules and regulations, and with the University's Policies and Procedures. The Controller directs and coordinates the University's financial and accounting affairs in accordance with GAAP, manages the University's accounting functions to support the strategic mission of the University, provides oversight support to the EVP and Treasurer related to the Bursar and Procurement functions of the University, and provides leadership by modeling the University’s mission, vision, and core values.
Responsibilities & Duties
Oversee all accounting and financial functions ensuring accuracy and compliance with all University policies and relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
Develop and enforce internal controls and corporate accounting policies and procedures.
Financial reporting & analysis; timely prepared and submitted for internal and external uses/requirements, within required deadlines.
Annual Audit and Federal Compliance (Single Audit) report and 990 Tax Return.
Coordinate with Human Resources for the annual 403(b) plan audit and assist with accounting portions of the audit.
Proper application of GAAP standards and accuracy of financial data and related analysis.
Provides special reporting and analysis of financial information to management.
Establishes procedures for reviewing and approving budgeted expenditure justifications and approvals.
Serves as part of the Operations Leadership Team.
Administrator for governmental online systems: G-5, Division of Payment Management, SAM, Federal Clearinghouse, EZ Audit, and other granting agencies.
Regular attendance is an essential function of the job reliable and timely with the expectation of 40+ hours per week.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in accounting.
Ten or more years experience and a proven track record in accounting/financial management.
Master's degree in business or accounting/finance.
Three years or more of experience as an associate in a CPA firm.
Experience in private non-profit higher education.
Experience in auditing, tax, and accounting for non-profit organizations, with extensive knowledge of regulatory standards and related report processing.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
Provides leadership, guidance, and oversight to all department managers in the Controller’s Office. These managers lead an effective and engaged team of financial professionals.
Oversees financial reporting, policies, and controls for the University’s $600 million annual budget.
Work is primarily indoors but requires the incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between local campus buildings.
Performing duties and attending events outside the normally scheduled work hours occasionally occurs and is required.
Incumbents may be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones, office machines, and nearby oral communications among University personnel and/or students.
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, move from one area of the building to another on a regular basis, sit and use a computer for a long period of time.
Manual and physical dexterity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer display screen, handwritten forms, and printed on paper.
Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
Ability to lift and carry a stack of forms and documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
