Manages the preparation of motor fuel tax, sales tax, environmental tax, excise, and other tax filings related to GROWMARK retail divisions and subsidiaries. Recommends and manages information and control systems over tax collection, reporting, and remittance. Manages updates or modifications to electronic filing and control systems while applying tax laws and regulations to resolve tax compliance issues.
SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP
Supervises, leads, trains and develops the Tax Compliance Coordinator. Provides leadership and guidance to tax team as well as other areas within GROWMARK, including divisions and subsidiaries, with employees involved in tax compliance duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Manages the people, systems and procedures related to the collection, reporting, and remittance of motor fuel, environmental, sales, excise, fertilizer, and propane taxes or fees for GROWMARK and subsidiary companies.
Manages proper tax configuration of ERP systems and external tax software products, providing requirements, design, testing and training related to product implementations and other software changes.
Provides leadership and management of ongoing business process design improvements regarding tax compliance.
Identifies, researches and interprets code, regulations, rulings and court decisions applicable to federal, state and provincial taxes and fees which apply to core member cooperatives, GROWMARK, Inc. and subsidiary companies.
Coordinates property tax payments and reviews annual property assessments for propriety.
Communicates with and advises senior management and other employees of GROWMARK, Inc. and subsidiary companies regarding tax compliance issues.
Assists and supports the Tax Director in providing tax services to core member cooperatives, subsidiary companies, and divisions.
Manages audits by taxing authorities. Develops response strategies to audit questions and information requests.
Provides guidance to product divisions and accounting staff to ensure correct billing and recording of motor fuel taxes.
Recommends and maintains control and reporting systems, in cooperation with Information Technology personnel, to ensure all tax invoicing and tax returns meet the compliance requirements of the taxing authority. Manages testing of system or process changes to ensure effective implementation.

Maintains professional relationships with taxing authorities.
Responds to internal and external tax information requests.
Maintains technical competency in cooperative issues and motor fuel, excise, sales, environmental, and other tax related subjects. Maintain technical competency in ERP system processes where taxes are relevant as well as other third party tax software..
Follows GROWMARK’s Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA and DOT policies and procedures, as they apply.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Normally requires a college degree in accounting, finance, or business administration, or equivalent and at least 6 to 8 years of related experience to demonstrate the ability to work in accounting or corporate taxation.
Other requirements are: demonstrated skills in interpreting tax regulations related to a variety of business transactions; understanding of accounting controls, processes, software, and financial accounting standards; proven leadership and supervisory skills; professional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate on highly technical matters; demonstrated planning, problem solving and project management skills; and proven computer skills, including spreadsheet, database, ERP, third-party software, and query tools, with the ability to use technology to enhance business processes.
Demonstrates essential abilities including business knowledge, collaboration, communication, customer focus, decision making and skill development.
Prefer a CPA or MBA designation to demonstrate advanced accounting/business knowledge.
Must be able to occasionally work hours above those considered normal to meet tax or system deadlines.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel independently and overnight if necessary.
Ability and willingness to participate in required training that may include education on GROWMARK’s policies and procedures and additional training as it relates to the requirements of the position.
