• Leads, mentors, assesses, and motivates a team of 3 – 4 accountants under their direct supervision.
• Works collaboratively with colleagues in the Controller’s Team, the Finance Division, and the University community as a whole.
• Develops an understanding of the complexity and variety of the University’s operations, and how those operations intersect and impact the University’s financial accounting and reporting.
• Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and written.
• Manifests accountability, dependability, reliability and authenticity.

• Continuously evaluates business processes for opportunities for improvement (monthly close process, general ledger entries, account reconciliations and financial reporting).
• Keeps abreast of tools/technology solutions which can be used to automate and streamline processes to improve general ledger related processes.
• Recommends process updates and effectively manages agreed upon changes in a collaborative manner.

• Primary oversight for general ledger accounting areas including bank reconciliations, receivables (e.g. student accounts, loan funds), liabilities (e.g. employee benefit reserves, debt-related balances), accounting for auxiliary services (e.g. conference and retreat services, health club, etc.) and other account categories as assigned.
• Reviews and approves journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations; prepares account analyses for complex accounting areas.
• Primary oversight of the status of the monthly financial close process, achieving completion in no more than 5 business days.
• Contributes to the preparation and review of monthly results narrative and annual financial reporting disclosures.
• Contributes to the preparation and reviews financial information for various surveys and analyses to ensure consistency with information from the University’s general ledger.
• Contributes to the evaluation and implementation of new accounting pronouncements and the accounting for new transactions, for consistency with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles.

• Actively participates in the external audit process and ensures that information for assigned areas is provided timely to meet reporting expectations.
• Contributes to the annual audited financial statements by drafting, reviewing, and approving notes and other disclosures to the financial statements.

• Enthusiastically participates in other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with strong accounting knowledge required.
• Skills developed generally after a minimum of five years of experience in an accounting related field (audit, corporate accounting, etc.) required.
• CPA strongly preferred.
