Hybrid Remote Schedule
This role has the option to be a blend of remote and onsite work if department and business needs allow and with approval from direct supervision. Our hybrid remote work schedule combines three (3) days on premises with up to two (2) days remote.
Key Roles
This position assists a designated area within the Accounting Department in maintaining financial records and ensuring financial transactions are properly recorded. Duties include transactional entries, preparation of journal entries, reconciling subsidiary ledgers, compiling data to aid other accountants, and working on projects in a support role to facilitate the Accounting Department in ensuring proper, accurate, and timely completion of various accounting applications, taxes, records, and financial reports within the established policies and requirements of general accepted accounting principles (GAAP), various regulatory agencies (RUS, IRS, Kentucky Revenue Department, etc.), and East Kentucky Power Cooperative.
Key Responsibilities
Analyzes financial data, extracts, and defines relevant information.
Records, classifies, and summarizes financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Assists in ensuring compliance with GAAP, Rural Development Utilities Programs (RDUP), IRS, and FERC requirements.
Initiates and processes journal entries for various accounts.
Reconciles sub-ledgers to the general ledger and researches differences.
Assists in the preparation of internal and external financial reports, variance explanations, and researching accounting issues and discrepancies.
Assists with system upgrades as needed. Supports and assists respective designated areas of the department in completing their assigned duties and responsibilities.
Compiles, processes, verifies, and reconciles invoices, ensuring proper general ledger coding and timely payment in compliance with financial policies and procedures.\
Reconciles vendor statements, researches, and resolves vendor payment issues.
Complies with state sales tax requirements by properly accruing sales tax on invoices.
Prepares and files monthly and annual sales tax returns accurately and on time.
Prepares and processes payment cycles with monthly reconciliation of the cash, payables, and expense accounts.
Maintains the integrity of the vendor master file by collecting proper documentation, including W-9 forms from all vendors.
Prepares 1099 forms for all appropriate vendors.
Prepares, analyzes, and posts the monthly accounts payable, expense reimbursement and procurement card transactions to the general ledger.
Utilizes the delivered PeopleSoft receipt accrual functionality to properly record the company's open liabilities at month end.
Assists in the annual audit process by providing analysis, supporting schedules, or documentation as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Requirements
Education and Certifications / Licenses:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or related area required. Accounting degree preferred, but if in related area, a minimum of 18 hours of college level accounting is required.
Experience:
Zero 0) to Four (4) years of related experience will be considered entry level Accountant I.
Five (5) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Excel and ERP, with PeopleSoft applications preferred.
