About the Role
We are seeking an experienced part-time Tax Manager to be primarily responsible for the client tax preparation function and to assist our advisors with client tax matters. CPA or Enrolled Agent designations are strongly preferred. The Tax Manager is welcome to work remotely or in our Downers Grove, IL office. The Tax Manager position offers flexibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to play a key role in serving clients during tax season and throughout the year.
In this role you will be responsible for organizing client tax information and documents, entering data into our tax software, and preparing tax returns. You will also be involved in other tax and tax planning matters, such as Roth conversion analyses, preparation of tax projections, proper tax withholding and estimated tax payment determinations, charitable giving assessments, retirement contribution calculations, researching tax issues, etc. You will interact directly with clients and advisors regarding tax return preparation and other tax-related matters, including gathering client information, communicating results and recommendations, and addressing client questions and concerns,
This role is ideal for someone who has experience preparing personal tax returns and is skilled in tax analysis, is highly detail-oriented, organized, a strong communicator, and comfortable working independently.
There is also potential for the position to expand beyond the role described above. Depending on skills and interests of the Tax Manager, opportunities could include supporting financial planning or portfolio management operations, or even transitioning into the role of a financial advisor. The scope of any expanded responsibilities will depend on how the staff member’s skills, experience, and career objectives align with the firm’s evolving business needs.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate internally and with clients to gather and organize client information and tax documents.
Prepare federal and state tax returns for primarily individuals using professional tax software.
Conduct detailed review and analysis of tax returns including identification of potential tax issues.
Manage and administer each tax preparation engagement from data gathering to submission and distribution of final tax returns, while seeking opportunities for process improvement.
Provide ongoing tax-related support to advisors, such as Roth conversion analyses, preparation of tax projections, proper tax withholding and estimated tax payment determinations, charitable giving assessments, retirement contribution calculations, researching tax issues, etc.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Experience: At least 3 years of tax preparation experience. CPA or EA designation strongly preferred. Experience with tax planning and analysis.
Detail-oriented: Strong focus on accuracy, very well organized, ability to prioritize, and analytical. Takes ownership for assigned tasks and duties.
Tech-savvy: High comfort level with professional tax software (experience with Drake Tax and Holistiplan is a plus). Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
Strong communicator and professional: Solid verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. High integrity, professional demeaner, maintains confidentiality and positive attitude.
Collaborative yet independent: Effective in a team setting, yet a self-starter that works well with limited supervision, and knows when to ask questions.
Details
Schedule: This is a part-time role with a seasonal increase in hours during tax season and for year-end planning and implementation. Required hours are flexible and as needed.
Tax season (February–April): Approximately 25–35 hours per week on average. Responsible for the client tax preparation function, including data gathering and organization, preparation and review of tax returns, and client communications.
Year-End Tax Planning Period (November-December): Approximately 10-20 hours per week on average. Assistance with year-end tax planning and strategy implementation, including RMDs, Roth conversions, charitable giving, etc.
Off season (May – October): Approximately 5-10 hours per week on average. Preparation of extended tax returns, assistance with tax-related issues and analyses as described herein, and ongoing client communications.
Compensation: $35–$50/hour, negotiable and depending on experience.
Location: Remote or in person at our Downers Grove, IL office.
