The Phoenix Symphony offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, paid time off, retirement contributions, and support for professional development. This is a full-time, in-person position based in downtown Phoenix. Some evening and weekend work may be required to meet the needs of the performance schedule.

The Phoenix Symphony is Arizona's largest performing arts organization and a cornerstone of the state's cultural life. The CFO will play a central role in strengthening its financial foundation during a period of significant change and opportunity.
Position Summary
The Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior member of the executive team and a central contributor to the Symphony’s financial health and operational integrity. This role oversees all core financial functions, including accounting, reporting, forecasting, treasury, audit, investments, compliance, and administrative areas such as payroll, contracts, and insurance. The CFO partners with the President & CEO, executive team, and Board to develop and execute financial strategies that support the Symphony’s mission, long-term sustainability, and strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic and Financial Leadership
Actively participates in long-range strategic and revenue planning as a senior leader.
Leads budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning, guiding resource allocation through a collaborative process aligned with strategic priorities.
Designs and maintains multi-year financial models and scenario planning tools.
Supports the institution’s efforts to strengthen its financial position, including the $60 million CRESCENDO Campaign.
Accounting, Audit, and Compliance
Directs accounting operations and internal controls in compliance with GAAP.
Oversees monthly closing process in coordination with internal staff and outsourced accounting partners.
Ensures accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
Leads the annual financial statement audit and preparation of federal and state tax filings, including IRS Form 990 for both The Phoenix Symphony and The Phoenix Symphony Foundation.
Maintains and enhances financial systems, policies, and procedures.
Treasury, Banking, and External Relationships
Manages day-to-day treasury functions including cash flow and liquidity.
Oversees relationships with financial institutions and ensures compliance with reporting and covenant requirements.
Builds and maintains strong working relationships with external partners, including auditors, banks, and other financial institutions.
Risk Management and Governance
Oversees risk management policies, insurance, and contract review.
Supports retirement-related planning and reporting.
Technology and Administration
Oversees payroll to ensure accurate processing, compliance, and effective coordination between finance, human resources, and an external provider.
Coordinates with Human Resources on policy and compliance.
Manages IT vendor relationship to ensure security and efficiency.
Oversees lease management, contract administration, and corporate insurance.
Financial Reporting and Analysis
Provides the CEO and executive team with clear, timely financial analysis to inform decisions.
Prepares scenario-based financial models for major organizational initiatives.
Supports the President & CEO and executive team in resource planning and organizational forecasting.
Board and Committee Support
Prepares and presents financial reports to the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, and other stakeholders.
Serves as Staff Liaison for the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board.
Team Leadership
Leads and mentors the finance and accounting team, including the Controller and the Accounts Payable and Payroll Coordinator, and works in close coordination with the Director of Human Resources.
Builds and supports a finance and administration team that works well together and holds a high standard for accuracy and accountability.
Qualifications and Characteristics
Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including at least 5 in a senior role.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit finance, GAAP compliance, and audit.
Experience managing finances through periods of constraint or organizational change.
Proven leadership in treasury management and operations.
Strong communication and analytical skills.
Proven ability to lead high-performing teams and work collaboratively.
Outstanding organizational skills.
Experience working with Boards, including finance and audit committees.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements This position operates in a standard office environment and requires the ability to use typical office equipment, to read printed and on-screen materials, to communicate effectively in person and by phone, and occasionally to lift and carry materials up to 10 pounds.
